Woke up early this morning with a call from ABC radio about a story in todays Australian about Woolworths dumping cage eggs from its stores. Predictably, Bede Burke, chair of the NSW Farmers Association egg group said it was unfair and would deny consumer choice. Theres no arguing with that really and its also a fact that cages provide a much lower cost production source - which is what tempted major businessses to boost profits by putting low-cost eggs from their intensive farms into cartons labelled free range and charge a premium. They laughed all the way to the bank - until the ACCC jumped on them.
