Woke up this morning at stupid oclock and was surprised to find it - TopicsExpress

Woke up this morning at stupid oclock and was surprised to find it still very dark. The water in Vlicho bay was so calm that the stars were reflected perfectly. Picked up anchor and off we set north. Saw a stunning sunrise over the mountains and motored up Lefkas canal to make the hourly ferry-bridge opening. Lefkas canal is so well marked out in the beginning from the marshy boat grounding surrounding water but it soon ends up marked out by thin poles painted white that can range from 3ft out the water to just an inch or two. Vigilance is very much required! We made the end of the canal with a few minutes to spare and waiting with a queue of boats. Lefkas is an island but only just. The causeway is not connected to the mainland by a bridge but by a ferry that is tarmacked and has street lights all the way along. I believe this is because if they build a permanent bridge they as an island lose island status and the perks and privileges that come with it. Anywho, got through in beautiful weather and pootled past the ferry-bridge, some old rusting hulks of bridges past and ancient architecture and out into the open water. The wind was pretty rubbish but we hadnt really expected any. The seas were rolling from the west so heading north we we side on and before we knew it prize for first chunderer of the trip went to Thing Two. I have to admit I dont really have my sea legs yet. It couldnt be called a rough journey by any stretch but the undulating seas with no wind got to most of our stomachs and then teenage sleeping sickness kicked in so I slept for most of the way. 14 miles from Paxos, the screeching fishing reel had me up like a flash from my deep sleep but sadly the line snapped and we lost a fishy meal. Saw one flying fish but otherwise very little action and disappointing wind for our motor-sail round the outside of Antipaxi to the east side of Paxos and into Gaios. The north-west coast of Antipaxi looks like a geologists wet dream. We cooked up the fish we caught the other day and are now being eaten alive by mozzies but cute place and looking forward to exploring tomorrow. Port fees a bit more than we had hoped so only the one night in port before anchoring out tomorrow.
