Wolf -- In Wisconsin, three Republican-nominated federal judges - TopicsExpress

Wolf -- In Wisconsin, three Republican-nominated federal judges just reinstated one of the most restrictive voter ID laws in the country -- less than two months before a major election!! Nearly 12,000 absentee ballots have already been mailed out without ID instructions and could be thrown out because they don’t comply with the new rules … And more than 300,000 eligible Wisconsin voters lack the proper ID to vote! Election administrators are scrambling to make drastic changes in a very short time frame and PFAW and our allies are scrambling to minimize the voter confusion and disenfranchisement that could happen as a result of this ruling. PFAW members and staff in Wisconsin are already working hard to connect with voters there and help people get the proper ID. As you can imagine -- this new ruling helps Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker TREMENDOUSLY. He is in a neck-and-neck race for reelection and was looking more vulnerable than ever when this latest ruling came down. Incidentally, one of the three judges responsible just so happens to be one of Walker’s favorite judges and someone he said he would nominate to the Supreme Court if he ever were to become president -- an aspiration he definitely will pursue if he wins reelection as governor! The state agencies in charge of implementing voter ID say they have no additional money to make sure voters get the ID they need. So, much of the work is going to fall on us -- progressives and voter advocates -- to make sure Wisconsinites are not denied their right to vote. Please help us overcome these challenges, protect voting rights and get our people out to vote -- renew your support for PFAW today with a donation of $5 or more>> Wisconsin’s not the only state with key races this year where right wingers have tried to stop voting in order to improve their chances. North Carolina’s elections will be the first since a similarly awful voter ID requirement went into effect there. In Georgia, a right-wing state legislator and the right-wing secretary of state are abusing their power and leading a witch hunt of a voter registration group registering black voters. In Texas, the Republican candidate for governor himself has a record of actual violent hostility to voting rights, having ordered an armed raid of a voter registration effort a couple of years ago as attorney general. This is just one more massive challenge we face … but we can expose these tactics, get voters the information they need and mobilize our base to vote if you stand with us and support our work. Please renew today with a contribution of $5 or more that will be put to work immediately to overcome our biggest challenges, like these assault on voting rights>> Thank you for your help! -- Ben Betz, Online Engagement Director
