Wollondilly Council Media Release Backyard Pile Burning Approvals Wollondilly Shire residents are reminded that during the Bush Fire Danger Period (normally between 1 October and 31 March) a Fire Permit issued by the Rural Fire Service will be required for any backyard and pile burning. Before ANY burning can take place, the property owner needs to contact Council for approval. Certain circumstances can present legitimate reasons for the approval of burning as an appropriate means of managing dead and dry vegetation. However, Council approval depends on a number of factors including property zoning. For reasons relating to air quality and fire safety all backyard burning is illegal unless prior approval is given. Different seasons also require different processes and approvals. Besides air quality and safety, consideration also needs to be given with regards to the vegetation being cleared. When clearing vegetation the property owner needs to be aware of the potential that rare flora or fauna species, protected under the Threatened Species Conservation Act, may be present. They should also be aware that clearing restrictions may also apply under the Native Vegetation Act. Council will not give consent to burn piles which were generated by unapproved clearing as these piles may be later used as evidence in compliance action by Council or State authorities. It is also important that approved pile burns be undertaken as soon a safety permits as piles left for long times may become habitat for either native fauna or pest species such as rabbits. After all these aspects are considered and Council has determined an application for a pile burn, the applicant needs to then seek approval from the NSW Rural Fire Service, Picton Office prior to the commencement of the burn. Residents should also be aware that unapproved burning could lead to heavy fines for the property owner. For further information contact Council on 4677 1100.
