Wollondilly Council Media Release Local community projects and event receive a Council grant Wollondilly Shire Council has just approved over $43,000 to local community organisations and schools for a wide range of community events, projects and awards under the 2013 Community Grants Scheme Funding Round. 57 separate grants were approved by Council bringing the total amount distributed over the past six years to $248,000, a significant contribution to the well-being of our local community. The Mayor of Wollondilly Cr. Col Mitchell said “Council is happy to support the wide range of events and projects we are able to do under the Grants Scheme. There is something for everyone’s taste or need, and across most communities within the Shire.” “Congratulations to everyone and I look forward to seeing the events, projects and awards being held” he said. Here is a list of grants approved: An Apps in Action workshop for people caring for children with a disability received a grant of $1,000 to enable people to understand the latest technology available for people to learn. Appin Historical Society received a grant of $1,000 to conduct a Children’s History competition to encourage young people to take an active part in learning about our local community and its history. The Picton AH&I Society received $1,500 to conduct workshops to encourage more young people exhibiting and participating in the annual Picton Show. All 17 schools within the Shire received a $200 grant to enable School Citizenship Awards to be presented to students, recognising good citizenship skills and behaviour. It is hoped that these students can go onto be the leaders of the future in our area. Regular community events such as Light up The Oaks, the Warragamba Ball, Works by WAG Art Exhibition and Rural Fire Service Open Days at Werombi and Buxton have been supported with a grant each. Such events enable local communities to enjoy local events and participate in community life. New events funded this year included a Caring and Information Sharing Twilight event by Disability Services Australia in October to acknowledge the work of local carers and inform community members of the new Disability Care Scheme. The Create Youth Culture Festival received a grant of $1,000 which will be held at Thirlmere in October to showcase the talents of local people and give young people an enjoyable local event. Once again Council has provided financial support for 10 Community Carol events across the Shire to ensure residents can enjoy the spirit of Christmas. Whilst the next round of the Community Grants Scheme does not open again until May next year, there are a number of grants and funding programs that local organisations can access. Council has provided a short list on its website wollondilly.nsw.gov.au or you can contact the Community Development Officer on 4677 8261 to talk about your idea or project and what could be available to assist you.
