Women and Weddings Sometimes, i cannot but wonder why ladies are so in love with weddings. Note i didnt say Marriage. I mean weddings! Maybe its because weddings bring them closer to their childhood fantasies. Maybe its because of the glitz and glamour that characterize the Day. Maybe its because of the euphoric effect an anticipation of that Day brings. Maybe its because of the attendant change in social status (Mrs. A). Maybe its because of the attendant socio-cultural respect weddings bring. Whatever the reason, most women are obsessed with the idea of their Wedding Day. Men, on the other hand, are mostly bothered about The Days Before and The Day After, for good reasons. Whilst most women are both euphoric and restless, most men are simply restless. I have met few men preparing for their weddings and the scenario is often that of tension. They are not particularly euphoric about that Day, they just want everything to work out without hassles. No fairy tale feelings. Its different for women, i think. Women are so much in love with their wedding day such that they may never forgive you if anything goes wrong. They pray it doesnt rain on that Day. They pray the Sunlight is just perfect on that day. They pray everything assumes perfection on that day. That nobody would say the wrong words, wear the wrong look or make the wrong move. And everyone must be pleased. All for her wedding day! But is the wedding day, an event for half of a day, worth such stress when the real task (marriage and parenting) lies ahead? I dont want to go into statistics, but how many marriages retain and sustain the euphoria and celebrity-like spirit of the weddings. I think the Wedding Day glitz and ceremony is one fantasy we have institutionalized. A temporary separation from reality (now this kind of thinking gets me into trouble, but who cares). The wedding day events have no bearing on reality and truth. And thats why it is often cherished by those who love fairy tales. Women! Are you married or Just Wedded, like the car says? #truthisscarierthanreality. Selah.
