Women and children were burned alive in their homes as they tried to hide. Men were gunned down in cold blood. Other victims drowned as they attempted to reach safety by crossing the huge expanse of Lake Chad. When the bullets ceased being fired and the fires stopped raging, local vigilante defence groups emerged to count their dead. They soon gave up. It was reported that hundreds of bodies were left strewn across the roads in this border town that had a population of 10 000 people.
