Women must be recognised By Mal Taime Women play a vital role in communities but are not being recognised says Governor for Jiwaka. Dr William Tongamp was speaking at the graduation ceremony for 64 members of the Jiwaka Women in Business Club that received certificates of attainment after attending a two-week ‘Start Your Business’ course at Kingku Hi-Tech Training Institute in South Wahgi district last Friday. Dr Tongamp said women play a vital role towards the development of this country but remain silent at the same time. He said unfortunately in Papua New Guinea women are not recognised and given priority and their male counterparts consider them as second class in all aspects. He said his government recognises women and has allocated K300,000 and a vehicle for them. Small Business Development Managing Director Nathan Timo said training for women is being delivered at their doorsteps but the provincial government must provide support. Mr Timo revealed that Enga, Chimbu and Eastern Highlands Provincial Governments had already thrown their support behind women’s programs in their provinces after the women completed similar trainings. He told the women that they now acquire training skills and must utilise the training. Women representative in the provincial executive council Rosen Kiap echoed the same sentiments and challenged the women graduants to seriously utilise skills that have been taught.
