Women urged to take up leadership Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Ms. Anne Waiguru took time off last evening to join other Kenyan women at a dinner held at a Nairobi hotel and inspire them to take up leadership roles. The 3rd Chapter of the Managing in Heels Dinner hosted by the Kenya Institute of Management provided an opportunity for sharing knowledge, experience and networking among women professionals. Besides Ms. Waiguru, other guests at the panel discussion were the Chief Registrar of the High Court Ms. Gladys Shollei, the CEO of the Karen Hospital Dr. Betty Gikonyo and Toyota Kenya’s Ms. Ann Kirumba. Ms. Waiguru said that despite the remarkable achievements witnessed in women leadership in Kenya, more successes would be inevitable with greater networking and sharing of lessons learnt so that women can utilize their full potential. She noted that this forum was therefore critical in inspiring a vision, and developing strategies for advancing women’s leadership. She underscored the need to bring more women into leadership, lamenting that women have historically been marginalized and often struggled to gain credence in the male dominated corporate, public sector and even non-governmental sectors. Reiterating her Ministry’s commitment to implementing initiatives geared at advancing the women and youth agenda, she hailed H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta’s appointment of six women to his cabinet, noting in addition the increasing number of women in senior positions in the executive and parliament than in any other administration in Kenya’s history. Encouraging the women to strive for excellence, she applauded them for overcoming the structured indifference and inequality in education, job placement, pay grade, career progression, and ultimately leadership to be the visionaries and ultimate women leaders that they are today. "Your heels, just like your leadership, should set you apart from the herd. As women leaders, we must be different and we must stand out. We must also inspire our protégées to be different", said the Cabinet Secretary in her inspirational remarks urging women to take up the challenge. She acknowledged that leadership was demanding given the traditional roles assigned to women, and underscored the importance of building adequate support structures to ensure a work-life balance. She said that despite ensuring delivery at work, it was important for women to reserve time for replenishing and nurturing their souls.
