Womens Day is not about giving flowers to your female friends and enjoying discounts to get into a nightclub. Its about remembering that although women make up half of the worlds population, there still hasnt been a female UN Secretary General or US President, that women still hold less than 5% of Fortune 1000 CEO positions, that 14 million girls are forced into marriages against their will each year, that rape victims are routinely blamed for their rapists behaviour, that womens personal choices are still restricted by political and religious ideologies dominated by old men, and that youd struggle to find a woman who hasnt ever been harassed on the street, bus, school, work or any other public space.
