Women’s Empowerment Week is about celebrating and standing in - TopicsExpress

Women’s Empowerment Week is about celebrating and standing in solidarity for the global fight of gender equality. Today, we honor the memory of Marzieh, who was loved not only for her angelic voice, but for her courage and resilience against the misogyny she faced in her lifetime. When Marzieh was a young woman, she defied pressure from religious clerics who tried to ban women from singing publicly. After the Iranian Islamic Revolution of 1979, the regime established a countrywide policy which prevented women from singing in public. In 1994, Marzieh decided to leave Iran and join the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) in Paris. Marzieh was the first and only woman in Iran to sing Adhan (The Call To Prayer), which was an act of defiance against the mullahs misogyny. As a result of the tireless work by women like Marzieh, Iranian women continue to stand defiant and outspoken despite living under a brutal dictatorship. After years of the mullahs using every method of suppression on these brave women, they have not been successful.
