WonderCon Anaheim 2014 I had a blast this year at a show that actually has the capacity for its crowd. I got in to everything I wanted to see without waiting in line for hours. Longest wait was maybe 30 minutes? Friday had a couple of fun panels - The Remakes/Reboots and the Movies of 1984. I still want an hour long panel of just Robert Meyer Burnett talking about J.J. Abrams STAR TREK movies. The Arena on Saturday was a blast and brought back fond memories of camping out in Hall H. Warner Brothers: EDGE OF TOMORROW with a great Bill Paxton Q&A. The footage was epic! INTO THE STORM. This movie was not on my radar, but the tornado footage was amazing! The panel was okay, mostly fans fawning over Richard Armitage. GODZILLA with Gareth Edwards. The footage they showed included an amazing Godzilla reveal! (One of the hilarious moments was a woman behind me behind caught by security and thrown out for recording footage from the GODZILLA trailer - the same one thats been online for months! And they clearly announced that it was the online trailer being shown on the big screen. They showed the new footage later.) 20th Century Fox: HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2. The footage was fun. The panel with Dean DeBlois and Jay Baruchel was also fun. THE MAZE RUNNER. I knew nothing about this movie. One action sequence they showed was great. The panel full of people Ive never heard of was kind of boring. DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. Great footage. Great panel - Matt Reeves, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Andy Serkis. THE SECRET SERVICE. The footage was entertaining. Though very obvious and over the top. Unusual to see Colin Firth beat the hell out of a bunch of thugs though. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. I was desperate to see footage from this and they did not disappoint by showing a roughly 5-minute opening sequence of X-Men versus Sentinels that was shocking! Cant wait for this to open. LUCY panel with Luc Besson. The action footage was really strong. When asked why he only directs certain pictures now he said, If I find a director who can direct the movie better than I can, I hire them. Nobody can direct LUCY better than me. When a fan asked why people say he was such a good director in the 90s and that hes not as good now and what does he have to say about that, Besson said, Nothing. Pause. Then, If you remember, critics didnt like NIKITA and LEON and THE FIFTH ELEMENT when they came out. Now they are considered classics. So nothing has changed. But I dont do movies for critics. I do them for you. Sony: DELIVER US FROM EVIL. Great panel with Scott Derrickson, Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez, Olivia Munn, Joel McHale and Jerry Bruckheimer. Probably the funniest panel of the day. Though Bruckheimer seemed to get slighted. I would have liked for him to be more involved in the conversation. Chris Hardwick was having too much fun with the others. Sunday in the Arena was: The Nerdist Panel. I dont watch their stuff, but it was a fun panel. SON OF BATMAN, the new DC animated feature, which was one of the best Ive seen. I would rank it up there with JUSTICE LEAGUE: DOOM. DR. HORRIBLES SING-ALONG BLOG. I had never seen it before and this seemed like the way to go with a few thousand fans. Fun, silly, not Whedons best, but worth seeing. I had a great time hanging out with David Blanchard and Rebecca Sanchez during many of those panels. Great to see Mike Brosnan, Charlie de Lauzirika, Sandy King Carpenter, and Bill Hainsworth. And those rapscallions, Tim Bradstreet and Chris Frobose, even made a brief appearance and we got to break bread. All in all, a fun weekend at WonderCon!
