Wonderful, informative documentary produced by BBC entitled Pain, Pus and Poison: The Search for Modern Medicine . For example, the history of mass development of pharmacies or drug stores can be traced to 19th century England. People were murdering each other at such rates with gradual poisoning that there was a national outcry. Parliament passed laws that a poison, like strychnine, could only be sold legally at certain establishments where it could be monitored. Another example is how one woman in the FDA blocked the use of a drug developed in Europe for morning sickness. Unbelievably the drug thalidomide had side effects that produced tragic limb deformities in the offspring of some women. The drug was never approved for use in the US and countless tragic disabilities were avoided because of the bravery of one women. This is one of the best medical documentaries Ive ever seen. Be forewarned that there are photos of humans suffering from smallpox and other horrible diseases and how these were treated and conquered.
