Wonderful initiative: A friend from a 4X4 enthusiasts club who had involved in the installation of a pico hydro with us in an Orang Asli village in the interior of Gua Musang just messaged to inform us that he had met a villager from the village who showed him a video from his mobile phone which showed that the pico hydro(3kw) is still running well to deliver lights when much of Gua Musang has its TNB delivered electricity cut off! But the village is cut off by flood now. So this friend cannot deliver his car load of relief material -food and medicine supplies. He has left for Gua Musang on the 1st day of the flood in Kelantan. Good job by the friend-you have done your bit, even though the goods may not reach the intended recipients. He went under a relief group MEDRF. On the slippery way to the OA village to install the pico hydro we can see logging trucks and logging camps along the way-which are more like logging roads. With so much logging going on it is no wonder that the annual year-end monsoon flood has become so out of control this time. It is a matter of time this would happen. Those who try to blame god or the moon probably need to face up to the more material, ecological damage sooner than later to trace the solution to its source-if they want to address the source of the flood. A number of parties who are in the know certainly cannot look the other way this time! So why there are more logging now? It is in turn due to suppression of Federal funding to this Opposition led state government. The oil royalty due to the state government has also been withheld by the Federal government for years-putting more pressure on the state government to give away more logging licenses to raise revenue....paving the way , inevitably, for worse flood! To make the situation worse the hydro electric dams in the state cannot hold back the flood water-and have to release their water-as admitted by TNB! A bitter lesson from the flood is: the dams which is hoped to help in regulating flood, cannot deliver when its limits are reached. For longer term solution the policy makers need to reconsider seriously if they want to keep big body of water behind the hydroelectric dams that pose a huge threat to populations living below it! A network of smaller dams or hydro electric generators could possibly deliver the electricity without the risk that play out to the countrys distress! The flood can only be addressed if it can be addressed from its source.
