Woo! Just read an email from my bargaining unit (management level employees are not allowed to have unions in Quebec, even though I manage no one, nor do most of my colleagues). We finally are getting Rand formula-style dues (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rand_formula) -- meaning that all new employees who fall into our job range are automatically entered into the bargaining unit, though they can still opt out. Generally speaking, people are too lazy to opt in or opt out, so default opt-in is always beneficial for organizations, and will benefit us all since the bargaining unit fights for all of us, not just members. And, even though the university has not updated it in their documentation, we now qualify to get paid for our first 7 hours of overtime (something that we were not eligible for in the past). There are some more goodies in there as well, but those were the two that made this sleepy afternoon just that much better.
