Wooden shoes -- can I call out Scott Perkins and anyone else who might have expertise in this area to weigh in? I got a pair of wooden shoes in Holland, MI a couple years ago. I know they were in use not just in Holland (Europe) in period but all over the Netherlands at the time so I figured that since Im playing Flemmish, I could bring them out for shoes when the weather is all kinds of ick and the ground is muddy and unpleasant. The ones I have are technically wedding shoes that would have been given to the bride by the groom and would only be worn once then placed at the foot of the bed for luck, but I like how intricate they are. I know that the way they should be worn is with 4+ pairs of socks (to make up for the fact that they are completely non-pliant). Anyone here worn wooden shoes as part of your attire? What are your best practical tips for rocking the wooden shoe look? Do you have insights into their use with regards to social standing, function, etc. in period?
