Woodley Wanderers 3 - 5 Loxwood Park Rangers Our first league game of the season and a great result to get the 3 points and our season off to a good start. Against a young and talented Wanderers side, this was a good result, especially if you take into account the 9 players we had missing. After a bright start and a few early chances for the Lox, it was Wanderers who took the lead, a mix up with who was marking who at the back led to a back post header giving the home side the league. After that point the defence looked solid for the rest of the first half, with the 3-5-2 formation once again working well. Josh Petty levelled the scores around the half hour mark when a Luke Parsons long throw was knocked down by Luke Giles for Petty to prod home from close range to open up his league account for the season. At the break the scoreline was 1-1, more emphasis was placed on playing out from the back from the start of the second half. However it was a Tom Mcnelly through ball from the back that put Petty through to double his account and put Loxwood in the lead with a lovely half volleyed finish over the on rushing goalkeeper about 30 seconds into the second half. The Parsons long throw was just as deadly in the second half and Loxwoods third came in from another Parsons long throw on the right hand side which was flicked on by Giles before Jason Ivil swivelled and volleyed home from the six yard line. Wanderers pulled one back straight from kick off with a good solo effort from one of their youngsters. Yet again, the long throw in for Loxwood worked when again Parsons threw the ball deep for Giles to head home this time to once again extend Loxwoods lead. From this point on, with about 20 minutes to go, Loxwood were under the cosh and lots of great defending from the back three - Flatman, Marshall and Tom, snuffed out the many developing attacks from the side in blue. At the same time Loxwood kept creating chances, a free kick crashing off the crossbar and nearly going in off the keeper and a good chance from the right hand side that flicked the post, could have put the game to bed. A fantastic double save from Wayne kept Loxwoods 2 goal lead in tact from a free kick and the rebound, but this didnt last long. Michael Flatman won a great aerial battle, but could only put the ball out for a corner. From the resulting set piece Wanderers pulled another back with a good header at the near post. Dan Mann and Shearer came on in the later stages to steady the ship but it was getting very nervy towards the end and this showed with the hastiness shown to get rid of the ball from some situations. But late on Jason Ivil put the game to bed with a curling free kick from about 25 yards out which beat the goalkeeper in the bottom left hand corner. A good 5-3 win and the first 3 points of the season for the mighty Lox! Notable performances came from Andy Marshall and Tom at the back, Parsons and Gilesy in midfield, but man of the match for scoring a brace and keeping his cool after a few niggly challenges went to Jason Ivil. Onwards and upwards for next week!
