Woodrock Animal Rescue were called out a while ago to do an inspection on a property in Pyramid.( on the route to Bela Bela)three weeks ago . All we can say is we should have gone when the call call came in. The conditions these poor animals are living in is not unacceptable. Neglect is the worst form of abuse. Using animals as a lively hood is not a means of making a living. Selling dogs to get an income is something Woodrock can never come to grips with( get a real job) trading in Animals goes against everything we believe in The people were living in pure filth the walls and floor was smeared in feaces. We noted dogs running everywhere. There were dogs barking and confusion coupled with the fear that they had been uncovered for the horrendous neglect to these animals the family of Four ( mother father and two sons) were trying to steer us away from their breeding cages At first we were stunned and very formally with pen and paper in hand were making a report and asking questions. In rescue we have to consider the powers that be and keep within the law. We must if need be put in applications to remove an animal or confiscate if the circumstances dictate. Often even if the conditions are bad we give a warning and return to see if changes have been made according to our advice. However, any official visiting would have made the judgement call that we made. To remove the dogs. The cages were covered in months and months of dried out poop. The water visible was by the grace of G- d from the rain. The shelters were make shift ram shakled areas to keep the dogs in.Which was not sufficient as the animals could hurt themselves. The area had no shelter from rain our sun and the dogs were trying to keep out of the elements under corrugated steel that had fallen at angels. There was no bedding visible. In fact it did not appear that a human had stepped into these areas to attend to the animals needs at all. There was not one morsle of food visible. There was a Labrador covered in mange. All but 2 dogs are sterilized. The one tiny Chiwhawa had an eye infection. The dogs were covered in fleas and ticks. No where in site did we see food bowls for the dogs. In answering our questions the one son who is in charge (and openly admits that they breed to make money ) told us they plan to get a license to breed. He informed us very proudly that they only clean the enclosures on a Sunday. This breeding facility is in our opinion not at all safe and healthy for any animal to be kept in, hence we instantly drew up surrender forms which they signed and understood. We were able to removed 16 dogs. We advised the owners that we would be returning. They were instructed to clean up and we gave instructions how to feed water and shelter the dogs and what we expect to see on our return Woodrock will be making a follow up visit. All dogs will be sterilized and there medical needs attended to.
