Woodrow Wilson was still a neutral President when the war commenced, not wanting to disturb the trade markets for either German or England. While visiting the Wilsons, the German high-command asked Wilson if they could use his telegraph machine to send top-secret cables back to Germany. Instead, they opted to send a different, much more important telegraph. Known as the Zimmerman Note, it was an attempt have Mexico take back Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and parts of Wyoming. The commuques sent to a potential enemy was then sent directly back to WiIson whereupon he used it to urge Congress to declare war!!
