Woods aiming high at Lydden Hill this weekend There is an age-old adage, that in certain situations you can either sink or swim. This year Kent based Keilan Woods is showing that he has the ability to mix it with the best that the British Drift Championship has to offer, and that learning quickly is an asset that he holds quite well. With a background in Rallying from his father Willie, currently Managing Director at Lydden Hill, himself a regular and successful competitor in Irish and British Rallying, not to mention running his own team in times gone by, with the likes of Mark Fisher, it was perhaps inevitable that Keilan would have, and take an interest in Motorsport. Coming to Lydden late last year to begin a new career, you could be forgiven for thinking that Keilan would probably make a move into Rallycross, given the history that Lydden has with the sport, but not so. It was the lure of drifting that started to appeal to Woods. He explained “Don’t get me wrong I like the Rallying and its my first memory of motorsport with Dad, the weekends we spent away competing, but for my generation now it is Drifting that is the sport and by a long way too. It appeals in so many ways and I am lucky that I am able to afford to take part.” Woods first competitive outing was at Lydden Hill earlier this year, and by the time that the British Drift Championship made it to Knockhill, a fifth overall showed that Woods has the ability to learn quickly and gain experience all the time. He explained “I was told once to think on what makes you happy, and I have taken that into my Drifting, and the aim is to get to Super-Pro. There is a great friendliness throughout the paddock and with the others that compete and I like that kind of atmosphere, its enjoyable.” This weekend sees him once again, take to the circuit and compete in the British Drift Championship where he will aim to finish well once; at a circuit he clearly likes and enjoys working at. He told us earlier this week “I like Lydden, I like the fact that on Saturday and Sunday there will be thousands here, all enjoying the action we provide. I like the fact too, that on Monday here at eight in the morning, after all the noise and action, you can hear a pin drop, as no one is here its so nice and quiet.’ With the late Richard Burns as one of his sport hero’s, this weekend don’t be surprised to see Woods put his name on the podium at Lydden, cheered on by his partner and his children. He told us “Yeah they all moved over recently and we are living here full time now, it makes such a difference having my partner here as well as my children Ellie-Mae and Bobby, not to mention Dad, floating about as well.” Asked what his ambition was for the weekend ahead, the reply from the amiable man from Convoy in Donegal was simple “I would love to win” he said and walked away smiling.
