Woodwardia Fern. We collect this fern in the Fall after the plant - TopicsExpress

Woodwardia Fern. We collect this fern in the Fall after the plant has gone through its cycle and is beginning rest time. We leave as many fern leaves at the plant base as possible. This protects the plant clump from frost and allows any remaining seeds to release. Then the work begins. Each Fern stock is gently crushed to reveal 2 long yellow veins. The veins are coiled and when dry we will Dye them with Alder Bark a deep Red/ Brown. Like Cedar, when you go and pick materials you make a commitment - rain or shine to complete the processing. We only pic 50 ferns at a time - this will take me about 5 hour and then 2 to 3 days to take the dye. Tomorrow we will go find an Alder and Ill post pics of that process. The reward comes later with fine materials for weaving baskets :)
