Word is that I am to list 10 books that have stayed with me. Not my thing normally but talking books is something I like to encourage. Here goes Sean P. Costello 1 Henderson the Rain King by Saul Bellow - full of passages that stick with you, an exotic setting, and a larger than life dynamic between Henderson and the King. I will say no more - read it. I needed something like it at a specific time in my life and I found it in this book. 2.The Ambassadors by Henry James - True Integrity, self discovery late in life, a great, great love story. May you all find your Maria Gostrey. 3. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss - probably the first place I recognized how fun words can be in combination. 4. The Collected Poems of ee cummings - defies description really. universal in topic and appeal and unusual in cadence and format. Tests and teaches at once. 5. The Second Treatise on Government by John Locke - hidden in this page turner is nearly all you need to know about stability in government and the roots of protest and discontent. 6. Catch-22 by Joseph Heller - The conclusion of this book the first time I read it has stuck with me and stuck with me over the years. How to practice to live in a crazy world and do it in plain site. An amazing work of art. 7. A River Runs Through It by Norman McLean - I left a movie theatre - the Loring Cinema in Hingham and drove to a book store to buy it after seeing the film. “It is those we live with and love and should know who elude us.” 8. Dr. Zhivago - Politics, love, poetry, Lara, this one pulls you into a soap opera and you come out of it cleaner than before. 9. Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez - I have never read this book that I did not read it cover to cover. I think I am up to six times. 10. The Tao Te Ching translated by Stephen Mitchell - takes you to a good place real fast. All the wisdom you need when the world whirls. And though you asked for 10 I will give you 11 cause I have it: A Tale of Two Cities - A brilliant plot, intrigue, desperation, revenge, and a martyr for the ages. I could have picked A Christmas Carol here or Our Mutual Friend too. Love me some Dickens.
