Democratic Alliance press statement by David van Vuuren DA Chief Whip in the Free State Provincial Legislature Almost 700 officials doing side business with FS government 06 November 2014 Release: Immediate An initial investigation by the Provincial Treasury found that a total of 687 government officials own or have shares in companies that are registered on the provincial supplier database. We are not shocked to learn that 413 officials employed within the Provincial Department of Education and an 211 officials from the Provincial Department of Health managed to get themselves listed as approved suppliers in order to do business with government. Incidentally, both the departments of Education and Health are in serious financial and administrative trouble. It is not surprising that where there are lax controls and a culture of impunity within government departments and entities, officials will seize the opportunity to get ahead financially at the expense of the people. We welcome the announcement by Finance MEC, Elzabe Rockman, that Provincial Treasury has launched an independent forensic audit into the possible undue benefit that these officials may have enjoyed. The DA will ensure that once the investigations are concluded that: • The report is made public; • The names of all officials and their affiliated companies are published; • All these companies are removed from the provincial supplier database; • All officials who unduly benefited from any tenders and/or contracts are suspended, investigated and, where necessary, prosecuted and dismissed from the civil service. The ANC has long entertained this unethical practise of abusing the office of incumbency to line the pockets of cadres and party alike. We need not look further than the ANC’s investment arm, Chancellor House, to know that this sort of questionable behaviour always manages to benefit the ANC at the expense of the people.
