Word of the Week The Greek word of the week is Thalassa - TopicsExpress

Word of the Week The Greek word of the week is Thalassa (Greek: θάλασσα)(Phonetic: thal-as-sah). The word means sea or ocean in Greek. The word shows up in the New Testament over 90 times amongst the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, as well as Romans, Corinthians, Jude and Revelation as well as others. The fascinating thing about this word is despite the fact that it is the Greek word it isn’t actually a Greek word. In fact, it isn’t a Hebrew word, an Aramaic word, or even an Indo-European word. Thalassa is of uncertain origin, and linguists do not even have any rudimentary idea where it comes from or what language family it belongs to. The idea has been advanced that Thalassa may be what Noah called the world ocean that existed during the flood. God said, “Never again will be a flood to destroy the Earth.” Genesis 9:11 NIV. It could be that the one great flood had a word all its own.
