Word on the dock in Delacroix today was that the fishing was just plain awful. I heard everything from the waters too low to the waters too cold, to the waters too dirty. Everyone that I ran into as I fueled the boat had one or some combination of these excuses that they used to claim why they didnt catch fish this morning. Now I knew that the blow that came through the last few days had dropped the water level quite a bit as well as, causing the temperature to drop a little and also stain the water slightly, but I didnt think that the fish were scarce enough to cause any combination of the above to shutdown the incredible bite that weve been having of late in Delacroix, so I headed out this afternoon in search of my own excuses. I figured that the low, chilly, slightly turbid water was going to call for a slight change in tactics, and I headed to a bayou that was 18 deep and began casting tightline tandem rigged jigs. After trying five spots with only one line trout to show for my efforts, I began to formulate some excuses of my own, but before I committed to any particular one, I gave the pattern that Ive been raking the fish with a try . . . plastic shrimp rigged 24 under a cork. I headed to a bay with a good oyster bottom where there is good water flow from a bayou emptying into it. I came in quiet and killed my motor before I got to where I wanted to position myself. As I drifted toward the spot, I slipped the anchor over the side and launched a cast before the anchor line even came tight. The cork hit the water and INSTANTLY sunk. Wow, was that ever fast! I tossed the 14 trout in the bucket and recast. Once again, the cork immediately sank. NOTHING HAD CHANGED AT ALL!!! What the heck everyone back at the dock was talking about; I havent a clue. Needless to say, it took very little effort to put a limit of trout in the boat. Oh well, try as I did; I couldnt find any legitimate excuses as to why the fish wouldnt bite. As a matter of fact, I could not find the not biting fish!
