[The sentence given above has been taken from todays newspaper (dated: April 30, 2014)]. ‘To earmark something for something means to designate (funds or resources) for a particular purpose. Another example to display a clearer usage of the word would be - The money had been earmarked for spending on new school buildings. Another context in which the word is used is to suggest a characteristic or identifying feature. For example, if you say that ‘this car has all the earmarks of a classic, it means that the car has all the characteristic features of a classic.
