The idiom ‘to drive a wedge between’ means to cause disagreement or hostility between i.e. if you drive a wedge between two people or groups of people you do something which spoils their relationship and turns them against each-other. An example that will better elucidate the meaning of the idiom is - The issue of global warming has driven a wedge between our government and the rest of the world.
