Words of Power Words can have a very dynamic affect on how well our bodies can perform. When we hear a song with a good powerful beat or an inspiring message, we naturally tend to feel stronger, even go faster, during physical exercise. It’s like we gained strength form the music. ` There is a whole school of thought about the power of controlling our body with our mind. Bio feedback is a term for accomplishing a change in your body with your mind. Good examples of this are: When you are doing an endurance event and you realize you are tight and tense, you tell yourself to relax and you do, you loosen your shoulders and get into a smoother pace. You usually train at 8 minutes per mile and the first mile of a half marathon you realize you just did a 6 and half minute mile, you slow down because you know you can’t do that pace for the whole race. You are in control. No amount of mental games with your body will take the place of proper training. But when you have trained well and put all the right pieces together, nutrition, hydration and rest, being able to better control your body can make a big difference. One of the ways we can have better control are with words of power, or mantras. When you have dedicated an endurance event to a loved one their name can be a powerful motivation. As you get tired, telling yourself, “This is for ‘that loved one’ and I will not quit”, can keep you going. Our personal words of strength can make us stronger and tougher, just like that music with the powerful beat. The important thing about those words of strength are that they must have a powerful meaning for you. If they can’t stir your emotion they will not do the job you need them to do. A good example of this is from the movie, Saving Private Ryan. After so many had died to keep him alive, the captain, as he was dying, said to Ryan, “Earn This”. Ryan tried hard all his life after that to be worthy of their sacrifice. That’s what you need a mantra as powerful to you as “Earn This”, was to Private Ryan. Find your own words of power and feel their magic. Having that personal power mantra can be just what you need to achieve the next level in your performance. Thanks for reading.
