Work: Two Extremes You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. - Exodus 20:9-10a NLT Most of us, when it comes to our work, feel the drive and need to be successful. Unfortunately, that drive doesnt come without its drawbacks. Conversely, there is the other side of the spectrum where some find themselves oblivious even to the idea of work. Lets talk about these two extremes when it comes to the subject of work. One extreme is laziness. We live in a society that so often glorifies the irresponsible--those who wont work--as victims. Somehow they feel they are owed something. This is insulting to those who are truly unable to work. Gods Word is clear; laziness is not good and He wants us to work hard. At the other extreme is the workaholic, and there are four common traits for this type of person. The workaholic: * tends to be the first person at the office and the last to leave. * tries to please others, and has a tough time saying no. * tends to only talk about work. * feels guilty taking a day off. Neither being a workaholic nor being lazy is Gods intention for us. The right balance is working hard to please God, yet taking time to back away and rest. Take a weekly Sabbath. It is one of Gods important ideas for successful living. When we do, we find ourselves refreshed and ready to give our best to our work, to our families, and to God.
