Work on super specialty hospital at Kurseong to begin soon Kurseong, 20 August: The construction work for a proposed super specialty hospital is likely to start very soon in the premises of the SB Dey TB Sanatorium in Kurseong. The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) is set to build the hospital at a cost of Rs 80 crore. Talking to reporters, GTA executive member Anit Thapa said that the construction work for the health facility will begin in a day or a two. Mr Thapa said GTA chief Bimal Gurung and other government officials concerned, GTA representatives and a team of architects visited the site in Kurseong yesterday. Prior to that, the officials also sat for a meeting to discuss the plans and other development projects for Kurseong region. According to him, such a hospital had been planned at the INS Bus Terminus area in Kurseong earlier, while even a foundation stone was laid for the same there on 20 February this year. “However, due to some reasons, the earlier site had to be cancelled,” he said. The funds for the proposed health centre has already been sanctioned and released, while preliminary work began today. It may be mentioned that the sanatorium premises had earlier been earmarked by the state government and the GTA for the construction of a medical college. The SB Dey Sanatorium is spread across 33 acres of land and has 301 beds, while only a few patients are undergoing treatment there for tuberculosis presently. It was built by SB Dey, a social worker, on his land in 1936. Later in 1975, it was handed over to the West Bengal government. Earlier, the sanatorium also used to house a 50-bed hospital for railway employees. sns
