Work on the Garudeshwar weir, proposed about 12 km downstream of the Sardar Sarovar Dam, was begun without any social or environmental impact assessment, public consultation and environmental clearance from the Environmental Sub-Group (ESG) of Narmada Control Authoritys (NCA), the 70 Gam Adivasi Sangathan said in a letter to the secretary of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests as well as the Gujarat Chief Secretary The Sangathan is an organisation of 70 tribal-dominated villages located near the Sardar Sarovar Dam across the Narmada river at Kevadiya in Narmada district, about 90 km from Vadodara.
