Work or sleep? Sleep deprivation a worrisome trend Dr. Alon Avidan, Professor of Neurology and Director of the UCLA Sleep Disorders Center, commented in a HealthDay News article about a new study showing that chronic sleep loss due to work commitments is rampant. In a survey of nearly 125,000 Americans, those who slept six hours or less worked more hours and tended to have longer commutes than those who slept longer. This finding is telling us something about a trend that is a bit worrisome, said Avidan, who added that chronic sleep deprivation can lead to ill health, including blood sugar problems and weight gain.
