Work to resume next week on SR 90 San Pedro Bridge east of Sierra Vista Temporary traffic signal will control traffic over next six months The Arizona Department of Transportation will resume work on the State Route 90 bridge spanning the San Pedro River east of Sierra Vista on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Motorists traveling on the highway connecting Sierra Vista with Tombstone and Bisbee will experience brief delays starting Monday, Sept. 30 when ADOT resumes use of a temporary signal that will control traffic on the single lane that is open during construction. Work to replace the old SR 90 bridge with a new structure that meets modern design standards has been on hold since April 1 to avoid disrupting the migratory bird nesting season in the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. The first phase of the $6.2 million project, which replaced the eastbound half of the bridge, was completed in March 2013. When work resumes Oct. 1, crews will begin replacing the westbound side of the bridge. The traffic signal will remain in use around the clock until the project is complete in spring 2014 and delays of eight minutes will be standard. ADOT encourages motorists to obey the traffic signal at all times because on-coming traffic cannot be seen from the signal locations. The San Pedro Bridge on SR 90 is an important connection on the primary corridor between the communities of Sierra Vista, Tombstone and Bisbee. The old bridge, which was constructed in 1955, is being replaced with a new structure that features wider travel lanes, emergency shoulders and greater clearance over the San Pedro River. The project is scheduled for completion before April 1, 2014 when the migratory bird nesting season arrives again.
