Work update: Loving it. I have had great experiences in higher-income-area schools (met the lovely Alida Jones for example) but I think I may have found my niche. This gorgeous little boy was having issues getting his printing work done and at first I thought it was motivation issues, but then I noticed he was squinting. I moved him closer and he did much better. Today he wrote a full page about his Nan, the lady who is fostering him. So proud. He said Miss Mickan, this is so much fun. Some of these kids are breaking my heart. The abovementioned little boy couldnt do sport last week because his shoes were too small. The sports teacher suggested he ask for some new shoes. He came back this week with shoes that were three sizes too big. We asked why he didnt want to do sport and he said I cant run in my shoes. Ill fall down and everyone will laugh at me. Another little girl loves coming to school and is very bright, but for some reason her Mum doesnt take her. She has to rely on her 12 year old brother to take her, and he doesnt really seem interested in going to school. Last week he was picked up by the police. Her Dad is in gaol. A third little boy at my other school is the best student in the class. His Mum drops him off at 8am, 45 minutes before class starts. He never has anything to eat for recess or lunch. Some people dont deserve the beautiful children they are blessed with. I feel lucky that Im in a position to make school a happy, safe place for them.
