As a result, all the offices of these category of staff were closed and various services could not be accessed by lecturers, students and other members of the public. Speaking with The Sensor yesterday at the Town Campus of the University, the Acting Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union of the University, Comrade Imoh Udoh said the workers had to down tool because management sacked two of its members unjustly. According to him, after the June 12 students rampage which claimed the life of a student and led to the destruction of the universitys properties, the Acting Chief Security Officer of the University, Chief Udoh and another staff Inyene Ikoriko were sacked by the management. Udoh said the Union viewed this as marginalization, adding that the University did not prove that the staff concerned committed any offence deserving of sack. The Union, he maintained, wants the affected staff reinstated to their jobs. The Chairman also said that the Union disagreed with managements decision that non-academic staff should write and pass examination before they are promoted adding that it is not included in the civil service rule. There is no other Federal University in the country where such a policy is in place. Therefore, we will not accept it in Uniuyo he stressed. A staff of the Union in the University (names withheld) also told The Sensor that the strike was necessitated by the non-payment of two months salary to its members. “Management has not paid us for two months now. We want them to pay us. This is why we are on strike” he said. The Sensor gathered that after the three day warning strike, if management of the university fails to meet the demands of the Unions, it will embark of 7 days strike and if management remains adamant, it will go on indefinite strike.
