Workers and laborers in many parts of the state are working under unhygienic conditions and very often in hazardous ones. Labor dept has not been equal to the task as we can see glaring disparities in wages, working conditions and helathcare facilities for them. The most disadvantaged amongst the laborers are those working in the construction and the mining industry. Particles of dust and minerals is endangering the health of a substantial section of workers who suffer serious diseases like tuberculosis and silicosis. Companies who are appointing them are not adhering to minimum safety precautions and not providing them safety equipment violating labor laws. Labor dept is not enforcing laws and creating the scope for the exploitation of the laborers. Government should make it binding on all employers to provide safe working environments for the workers and ensure that enough funds are allocated for creating healthcare facilities for them .Civil society members should also draw attention of the Govt in this regard and when required move the court of law for enforcement of the legal provisions governing workers and their interests.
