Working ... The Obama administration’s decision to delay a mandate for large employers to provide health insurance or pay fine is both meaningless and significant. It’s meaningless because it’s such a small number of employers. Nearly all employers with more than 50 employees already provide health insurance. But it’s significant because it highlights The Great American Health Care Mistake. This country should have never tied health care to work. It makes no sense to let employers make decisions about our health care, what kind of coverage we buy, or our provider networks (and, therefore our doctors). But how to un-do that? Workers don’t want to give up health care (even thought that has been the trend) and companies didn’t even make this case during the health care reform debate in Congress. Why? I don’t know. Having employer-paid care is even more unsettling when more and more of us are self-employed in this economy. And Indian Country? Only about four-in-ten have employer sponsored health care, compared to more than seven-in-ten from the US population.
