Working as a registered dietician at a Norfolk hospital, a young Martha “Martie” Slaughter wished to escape the banal rituals of everyday life. “I was just looking for adventure,” Slaughter said. To find the excitement she craved, Slaughter enlisted in the Medical Service Corps in 1984, taking her on a journey from the deserts of Saudi Arabia to a refugee crisis in Cuba. Like Slaughter, Mary Lou Brown also chased the thrill provided by military service. Brown had a career in the Navy and Army as a nurse in Vietnam. Slaughter and Brown were honored, along with other Bedford and Franklin County female veterans, at a dinner hosted by the Disabled Veterans of America (DAV) Chapter 60 on May 30. The two women chronicled their harrowing experiences in combat zones, experiences that ultimately changed their lives.
