Working on a two-minute address for the Neary Sweeney mural dedication on Thursday. When I think about the qualities of these two men--the resolve and commitment it takes to run into danger when others run from it--I am humbled. Every life is precious to them, an absolute truth that flies in the face of the bitter words from the crowd gathered in front of Ladder 4 Engine 40 last night. The community has suffered a terrible loss, but they are blaming the very people who did their utmost to save their children. A deep divide lies between the citizenry and those who protect them--a divide I have tried to close a bit over the past 23 years. I wont include this latest controversy in my address, but it will give added weight to my remarks, and have me choose words carefully.
