Working on the following for a Cap Journal editorial. Comments? Bicycling Infrastructure is Cheap When 4th and 5th streets West of Kanas were improved in 2013, the cost was $1,559,659. The cost of bicycle improvements was $11,960. Bike route street signs were later purchased for another $1,235. Total cost: $13,195. That is less than 1% of the total cost of the overall project. Bicycling infrastructure is cheap. It also does suffer the wear and tear of automobile infrastructure and doesnt need to be replaced as often. The argument that avoiding the cost of bicycling infrastructure will greatly enhance car infrastructure spending is false. That only car infrastructure somehow deserves attention, and that all other costs of improvement such as sidewalks, bus shelters and bicycle infrastructure should be abandoned because the funds saved could make a significant dent in paying for road infrastructure, is false. Now, not all people have means to drive. Having transportation means you can get to your job, the grocery store and out to shop and see friends. Not having transportation means one is cut off; facing poor food choices, low job opportunity. obesity, and depression. We all go to churches and make donations to help the less fortunate. Providing walking and cycling infrastructure is a real world way to help those folks help themselves. Finally, please remember: +1 bicyclist means -1 car. If you want to drive somewhere faster, get those other people out of their cars and onto a bicycle or sidewalk. Make it safer for them and for you. Provide convenient and fast ways for everyone to get around. Make it attractive. Then drivers can get to their destinations faster, and the bicyclists and walkers can too.
