Working student position now open at LOPE (Lonestar Outreach to Place Ex-Racers). LOPE is a 501(c)(3) non-profit ex-racehorse adoption program that takes horses from the Texas racing industry, retrains them, then adopts them out to new homes and careers. LOPE operates out of two facilities in Dripping Springs and Wimberley. LOPE is seeking a reliable, part-time working student to help in all aspects of horse care. Duties may include grooming, cleaning tack, light stall cleaning, picking out paddocks, assisting with vet and farrier appointments, general barn cleaning and organization, turning horses in/out, and helping with fundraising events and shows. Applicants should have some experience with horses, be 18 years or older (though exceptions may be made for a very experienced teenager), have reliable transportation, and be able to work outside. Compensation will be regular lessons with Lynn Reardon and LOPE staff. The LOPE Education Program includes lessons on retraining ex-racehorses, horsemanship instruction and coaching on topics like rider confidence, posture & “tone” to the horse. Lessons are tailored for each horse/rider’s needs and goals; and can include ground work, riding sessions, round pen exercises and so on. LOPE has seasoned teachers (including lesson horses who came from Texas racetracks), and a relaxed environment for learning. This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to learn more about horse care, training green horses and re-training ex-racehorses, rehabbing race injuries, and riding and horsemanship. For more information on LOPE visit lopetx.org. Interested applicants should send inquiries to suzanneminter@gmail. Please include resume, summary of horse experience, and three references.
