Working with newcomers to the program can be very rewarding. Many of them are troubled, confused, and resentful. They need guidance and help to understand that God will strengthen and change them through their Twelve-Step work. Through their willingness and commitment, they will experience rewards and miracles that far outweigh their present pain. We can encourage newcomers to work the program one day at a time. This can be growth experience for us. As we reflect on where we were when first introduced to the program, we see and emphasize an important point about our decision to join the program. We made the decision only after we suffered enough, were discouraged, were tired of hurting, and had “hit bottom.” Preach the word; be prepared in season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 2 Timothy 4:2. Sharing the story of our healing and recovery is the testimony God wants others to hear. Each of us has a unique pilgrimage to relate, and someone will receive encouragement from our message. Be imitators of God…and live a life of love, just as Christ loved… Ephesians 5:1-2. To keep the fire of our spiritual awakening alive, Step Twelve also requires that we practice the principles in all our affairs, giving away the love we have received.
