Workshop for parents By: Sujatha Subraman Mulund-based Sarvajanik Shikshan Santha’s Lokmanya Tilak English High school recently held a seminar for parents to mark the silver jubilee year of the school. Dr Kavita Rege, principal of Sathaye College in Vile Parle graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr Rege briefed the audience on the role of parents in nurturing their children. “In many urban families the focus of parents is on academics. If joys are linked to the marks that children bring, then they will get a wrong message. Children will start fearing as to what will happen if they do not score excellent marks which in turn will lead to stress and depression among the small children,” she remarked. Addressing the audience, she further stressed on giving the importance to the child’s interest. “The interest of a child could be different from that of the parent; hence it is important to identify and motivate its interest before choosing a particular career,” says Dr Rege. She also touched upon the topic of time management. “Parents often pass on their stress by scolding their children. Instead one should cultivate the habit of sharing the problems with children. Simple statements like ‘I have to reach at this time, I am already late so can you help me to finish the task.. .’ makes a child feel important and involved,” she stated. Dr Rege was of the opinion that in nuclear families, fathers must also share the domestic responsibilities. She also maintained that communication is an effective tool for bonding among family members. The seminar was attended by members of the school committee along with the heads of various sections attached to the institution. Saili Dalvi, principal of the school informed, “This is our silver jubilee year. We kick started our celebrations with an informative seminar for parents.” Dr Vivek Deshpande, chairman of the school added, “We have planned many inter-school competitions for this year. We are also upgrading the infrastructure by installing CCTV cameras in the school for security reasons.”
