World Briefing | Middle East Iraq: Two Bombings in a Kurdish Neighborhood By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: August 30, 2013 Two bombs exploded Friday night in a Kurdish neighborhood in a town in northern Iraq, killing 12 people and wounding 10, security officials said. A nonlethal explosive device was set off first in the town of Tuz Khurmato, and after a crowd gathered, insurgents detonated a second, much more powerful bomb, said the town’s police chief, Col. Hussein Ali Rasheed. Tuz Khurmato, a frequent flash point for violence, is in a region contested by Arabs, Kurds and Turkmens about 130 miles north of Baghdad. In a related development on Friday, the Iraqi branch of Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for a lethal wave of coordinated bombings in the Baghdad area this week.
