World Consumer Day On the occasion of World Consumer Rights day, we strongly demand that consumer legislation in Pakistan must be aligned with internationally recognized consumer rights according to United Nation consumer policy guides lines. This is a very basic and essential step towards better consumer protection. These rights make it sure that consumers receive basic necessities such as water, food, medicine and electricity from product makers and service providers. Also, these rights ensure health and safety, consumer education, consumer training, consumer participation in production processes, redress, consumer participation in policies and better environment. Sadly current consumer legislation in Pakistan does not follow these rights fully. We also demand that consumer legislation and consumer protection must be improved in Islamabad by amending Consumer Protection Act 1995.Under this act formation of the consumer council was mandatory. Unfortunately, that council has not been established after many years since 1995. We demand from Khyber Pakhtun Khah assembly for better legislation in the province by incorporating internationally recognized consumer right .It would be better for consumer protection if the province establishes consumer councils and consumer courts in its districts following the example of Punjab province. We demand from Punjab legislators and government to improve legislation and promote awareness of consumer rights and redress mechanism such as consumer protection councils and consumer courts in its districts. We demand that Sindh Assembly must not ignore any of consumer rights in its proposed legislation. Besides, it must be ensured that consumer suggestions, feedback, proposals are sought through a media campaign in the province. We demand better legislation, better implementation and better consumer protection in Baluchistan and all other areas of country. Governments, businesses, media, civil society and public should cooperate with each other for better consumer protection because a combined effort means better consumer protection which is a path to better democracy, better economy and a prosperous country. We as a nation must take steps to bring peace in our troubled country because it is only peace which really ensures protection of rights whereas violence, murder, mayhem, terrorism lead us to violation of our rights. We demand that government and society must act to protect consumers from malpractices, fake goods, poor services and faulty products by insisting on implementation of existing legislation by taking steps to improves regulation , redress mechanisms, awareness of consumer rights and consumer participation when it comes to products and services. Better regulation could reduce the crimes and faults of products and services and better consumer participation could improve the design, quality and standards of products and services. We also demand that consumer contracts with private and public sector about basic services such as gas and electricity must be reviewed in order to give consumers a better and fair deal. We appeal to consumers to know about their rights, consumer legislation and consumer problems because without active public efforts to make things better, things never get better.
