World Cup Honduras Popular Dish Tamales The basic tamal is a brick-shaped lump of spiced corn masa, with a filling made of several foodstuffs, including meat (either beef, pork or chicken), potatoes, olives, capers, raisings, rice, chickpeas, and many others. Once shaped, the tamal is wrapped in several layers of fresh banana leaves and tied-up with thin strips cut also from banana leaves. Then, it is cooked in a pot of boiling water. What do we call this? Afro-Hondurans are direct descendants of the Mende people from Sierra Leone. They still speak a variation of Mende and practice many of the customs.
