World Cup insight on African teams It has been a tough tournament for the five African teams in Brazil, as they seek to get off the group stages of the biggest soccer event on Earth. OPFC looks at the performances of the African representatives’ in this highly competitive tournament. #Ghana Bucs’ keeper Fatau Dauda started from the bench for Ghana on Tuesday morning, as the Black Stars succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the United States of America. It took less than a minute for the US to get ahead in the score-sheet. Ghana answered in the second half, but laps of concentration in the stroke of the second stanza cost the Africans a point, as the US scored their second goal which put the tie beyond the Black Stars’ reach. The Ghanaians will now have to beat Germany on June 21st in Estadio Castelao, in order to increase their chances of progressing to the next stage of the tournament. #Nigeria Nigeria will have themselves to blame for failing to beat Iran in their opening match in group F. The Super Eagles struggled to break a resolute Iranian defence, and will now have to fight for better results against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Argentina on June 21st and 25th, respectively. #Cameroon The Indomitable Lions also had a bad start in the tournament after going down 0-1 to Mexico in their opening match of group A. Led by Samuel Eto’o, the West Africans had a decent match but failed to take advantage of the chances they created.. Cameroon’s next match will be against Croatia on June 18th. #Ivory Coast Inspired by their talisman Didier Drogba, the Elephants came from a goal down to beat Japan 2-1 in their opening match in group C. They are according to pundits, one of the two teams to make it out of their group. They will come up against Colombia on June 19th. #Algeria The North Africans will rely heavily on their Valencia FC talisman Sofiane Feghouli when they come up against Belgium on Tuesday in Belo Horizonte. In their second straight appearance in World Cup finals, the African side will have it all to do if they wish to do better than their first round exit in 2010 in South Africa. They will come up against Belgium’s ‘lethal’ attack force which is led by Everton forward Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard. •Do you think 1 or 2 or any of our homies will make it to the next round? #Bucs_Lady_Cha_MrsMatlaba
