But for many people around the world the company is a major threat. Building on a terrible legacy of human rights abuses, Coca-Cola has joined an initiative cooked up by the world’s wealthiest nations, called the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition. The New Alliance aims to increase corporate control over Africa’s food system. But we’re determined to stand in its way, and we need your help. We have little reason to believe that Coca-Cola’s £3.1 billion investment in East Africa will bring benefits to local people. The company has a controversial track record, with allegations of child labour, water contamination and even murder. Now it’s part of a scheme aiming to help corporations grab land in Africa, take control over seeds away from farmers and promote expensive agricultural chemicals that can lock farmers into debt. Our government is cosying up to corporations like Coca-Cola rather than listening to the voices of farmers and communities that stand to lose so much.
