The World Health Organization (WHO ) warned that over a billion people annually become infected and develop vector-borne like mosquito , flies , fleas or water snails diseases , of which more than one million die . That is why the United Nations health agency decided to dedicate World Health Day , which falls on next Monday, March 7 , to raise awareness of the importance of preventing vector-borne diseases. Dengue , malaria , leishmaniasis, Lyme disease , schistosomiasis , or yellow fever are some of the diseases or insect bites that cause havoc small reptiles annually and is exposed to more than half of the world population . Small bite, big threat is the slogan chosen by WHO to raise awareness of the importance and danger of a disease that can be avoided . A global agenda that gives higher priority to vector control could save millions of lives and prevent much suffering. Simple and inexpensive interventions such as bed nets or spraying insecticide inside the house have already saved millions of lives, said Margaret Chan, WHO director-general , said in a statement. The vector-borne diseases particularly affect the poorest countries with poor sanitation and housing . The vector-borne diseases have increased significantly in the last two decades due to globalization and increased travel and international trade , as well as the increase in temperatures, which has allowed the expansion of vectors tropics other less warm areas of the planet. A clear example of this is the mosquito that transmits dengue , thirty years ago was in nine countries and now only survives in over a hundred , including European nations.
