World Sleep Day--Third Friday of March Every year. The motto: restful sleep, easy breathing, healthy body. Sleep: It begins from the pineal gland right at the centre of the brain. Melatonin starts pouring out, and slowly its level increases in the blood. The core temperature starts dropping by a fraction of a degree at a time. Gradually, muscle fatigue sets in, the respiratory rate changes, blood oxygen levels drop and finally cerebral blood flow decreases. Yawning becomes frequent and the inevitable happens. The person falls asleep. There is no reason not to go to sleep when you feel sleepy. Sleep is the human body’s mechanism to repair the daily damage caused to body and mind. From preventing oxidative damage, improving immunity, hastening wound healing, improving memory to preventing hair loss, good sleep has no substitute.
